Before You Slept
In the dream you breathed fast
Became a rainstorm that sprinted
across the Gas-and-Go's of Wyoming.
Your eyes watered but you did not apologize
for picnics hit
or the Winnebago's washed.
Funny now to think I was 17.
Once we drove that Uhaul to Anchorage
Saw weather and believed
the camp fire stories of each
state. Now it's been a while since I've seen much
of anything.
And you? Kept indoors and inconclusive
No prognosis again
Knives slicing lives like lunchmeat
Biopsies always forthcoming yet
I'm here. Yeah, I know you know but sometimes
hearing familiar tires on the driveway can pounce
on what was once a heart
or cause the doggie's tails to wag.
