Another Thursday Afternoon
I thought we would have some answers
But we just have each other.

I don't know for certain where I went wrong,
Why you're not sitting beside me as I drive-
No conversation to divert my thoughts
From the man who sits
Outside Hanky Panky's draped door.

He collects cover charges,
His lazy cat jaws snap shut, chewing gum slowly
As his eyes drift nowhere.
Above his lawn chair is a billboard
Advertising the "Watch of Royalty."

Yousef, I am sorry for all of us.

We're all the workers here
Crammed seven to a car
With rosaries and skeletons
hanging from rear-view mirrors.

We dancers do what we can't avoid.
We are Maruichi music greeting
Taco trucks with menudo Mondays
And poets wielding word whoopee cushions
To shock peeling paint.
